Water absorbing crystals are also called super absorbent polymer ( based potassium polyacrylate type ). It is a white granule polymer before absorb water. And after absorbing, it can turn water gel like this:

This kind gel have strong stock water ability even under pressure. Other side, this stock ability is less than plants’ root’.So guess what will happen when you put it into the soil?
